Wonkey Donkey’s Story

Wonkey Donkey, as he is affectionately known, is a bit of a miracle. He was found by a couple Helen and Peter who had been volunteering at the hospital for only a few days previously. He was lying on his side, in the road where he apparently had been for several days after being hit be a vehicle.

Helen and Peter immediately called our rescue vehicle and in due course he arrived at the shelter. He was in a very sorry state. He had obvious brain damage and was unable to sit or stand up and kept falling over to the side. Due to the fact that he had been lying in the road for days, he also was very dehydrated and covered in superficial grazes. Most of the staff thought that he wouldn’t recover, that his injuries were too severe but I wanted to give him a chance.

Wonkey Donkey Before his recovery

After initial fluid therapy to correct his dehydration and medications to help the brain injuries we left him to rest. The next day, we started on a rehabilitation programme which consisted of massage and physiotherapy for which Peter and Helen would come and help with and Siteram and I would get him standing in a homemade sling for about an hour every day.

His appetite was always good and we would prop him up with sandbags so that he didn’t fall over to the side while eating and drinking. Each day he made a little bit of progress – small but nonetheless, there. It was a fantastic moment, 10 days later when he was able to stand up straight by himself without the support of the sling. It was then onto the walking… just one step at a time.

Today, unless you already knew his story, you wouldn’t know anything was wrong with him apart from a very slight swagger. His initial days of looking a little bit tipsy while he walked have long gone and he can chase the ladies like the best of them. He’s been known to given a sneaky kick as well, should anything come between him and the girls, despite having been gelded last year.

He has a tremendous strength of spirit and is an amazing recovery story. Sometimes a bit of time and TLC is all that is required.
