Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Wonkey Donkey, as he is affectionately known, is a bit of a miracle. He was found by a couple Helen and Peter who had been volunteering at the hospital a few days previously. He was lying on his side in the road and had been for several days after being hit by a vehicle.

Wonkey Donkey now has his own page so you can read his full story. Wonkey Donkey’s Story

Case Study: A Dog with Mange

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Dogs suffering with mange is an extremely common sight in India (and indeed many other parts of the world). Mange is a skin condition caused by mites, which cause allergic reactions and creates incredibly itchy, flaky skin and results in hair loss. Treatment can be with a variety of products such as medicated shampoos and sulphur baths, but it can take weeks sometimes months to clear and have a full regrowth of fur.

It can be a very debilitating condition, not just irritating, but also painful as skin sores often develop and can become infected. Read a case study written by Erika, a Project Raja volunteer. It just goes to show that every bit of time and compassion given can go a long way to making a big difference in the lives of these animals.

The Calf Rescue

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

Early one morning we were called to a rescue in a village just outside Pushkar – the complaint was that a calf had fallen down a well. Our rescue vehicle, on another rescue at the time, dropped off that complaint at the hospital before rushing off with all manner of ropes and equipment thought to be necessary for the rescue.

It wasn’t the first time that we had been called to such a rescue – in rural Rajasthan, wells are common place and with no walls or warning around them, stray animals quite frequently fall down them.

A Volunteer Case Study - Monkey

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Heather is a veterinary student who volunteered with us in Autumn 2007. During her time with us, she wrote about a case that was particularly close to her heart. A monkey that had been hit by a vehicle came into the hospital. Thanks to the care and attention that was given, the monkey was released within 2 weeks. This is their story:

‘It’s inevitable when you work closely with animals that certain cases or characters will interest you more than others, and some steal your heart. It was a day like any other when the rescue vehicle pulled up at the hospital and unloaded a few dogs with infested bite wounds, a calf who had been lying down for four days and a baby monkey.

He was in a sorry state having been hit by a vehicle on what the locals call Snake Mountain, named after the twisting road that winds its way over the hill between Pushkar and Ajmer. There were no visible wounds but he was paralysed, confused and very depressed.
