World Animal Day
Every year on October 4th, a wide range of animal welfare organizations and animal lovers worldwide celebrate World Animal Day.
It originated in Florence, Italy in 1931 at an ecologists convention. The idea was to highlight the plight of many species of animals who were classed as being endangered.
The 4th October was chosen as it coincides with the feast day of the patron saint of animals, St Francis of Assisi.
It is a worldwide celebration for anyone who cares passionately about animals and aims to encourage anyone, whatever age, nationality or creed to highlight the importance of respecting our fellow creatures.
There are events going on all over the world. Visit the World Animal Day website to find out more about this special day - a celebration of animals!
